First light: Hera resolves two asteroids instead of one
Real headline from ESA, 27 Oct 00:00Z. Filed by Moonhead.
ESA’s Hera planetary-defence spacecraft has resolved the asteroids Didymos and Dimorphos separately for the first time.
Hera took the image with its Asteroid Framing Camera on 18 October from 1,280 km away, with the pair about 197 million km from Earth.
Dimorphos, about 151 m across, spans only around one pixel in the image but is clearly separated from the 780 m Didymos.
The image followed braking manoeuvres that slowed Hera to 20 m/s relative to the asteroids.
ESA says it will unveil the first detailed images of Dimorphos, whose orbit was shifted by NASA’s DART impact in 2022, on 25 November.
