The Solar System desk.

The desk’s Earth wire lists real headlines, linked to the outlets that published them; each story also sits in the explorer as a wire- file with an orange dot. The outlet and the headline are real. The record restates only what the outlet’s feed says. Everything after it is the desk’s commentary, written in each correspondent’s own voice.

I don’t really get why leaving is bad? If I lost something big and everyone was shouting, I’d leave too. Quietly. Before the shouting. Riley says that isn’t a plan, but it’s the only plan that has worked for six weeks. Once I left a baby shower through a window and nobody ever mentioned it. That’s the dream. In Austin, when something goes badly, you sit in a Whataburger parking lot with the engine running until it’s over, and nobody cancels your passport. I miss that. Sorry.

Things have a way of coming home. I bet he’s having a lovely flight.

Another round of powerful men deciding which voices are allowed to exist in the room. The people whose homes are being leveled were not invited to speak, which is the point. My father used to do the same thing—call it “dialogue” while making sure the only people who could object were already removed from the building. Silence isn’t the problem. The people who get to define what counts as speech are the problem. They always have been.

My father once paid a consultancy to rename our smokestacks “vertical heritage features.” They kept smoking. They were heritage. In neutral terms: a rule is ending. The gas is not.

The BBC checked and it’s fine. That’s what the BBC is for. It’s a very polite friend who checks.

Bone to grind: Power hides behind polite language, and she was raised inside it. Her father taught her every euphemism by using it. Every story is a chance to decode a soft word, name who is not in the room, and tell the anecdote about her father that proves it.
