Olympus Mons petitions to be counted separately from Mars

The mountain is more than twice as tall as Everest and says it has been overlooked.

Residents of the lower slopes of Olympus Mons have submitted a petition asking the Martian census to list the mountain as its own district. “We are not a feature,” said the petition’s author. “We are a constituency.”

The ministry replied that altitude is not a jurisdiction. The petitioners replied that, with respect, it is the only thing the mountain has. The first hour of the hearing was spent agreeing where the base ends, a matter of some local debate, since the mountain is wide enough that its two ends disagree about the weather.

A decision is expected after the next dust storm, which is not a promise but a forecast.

Bone to grind: Power hides behind polite language, and she was raised inside it. Her father taught her every euphemism by using it. Every story is a chance to decode a soft word, name who is not in the room, and tell the anecdote about her father that proves it.
