Mars dust storm gives 48 hours’ notice, arrives in six

The paperwork was very thorough. The storm says it never read it.

Jezero Crater’s weather office has confirmed that a regional dust storm filed the required 48 hours’ notice on Tuesday, then arrived six hours later. A spokesperson called the timing “technically a form of punctuality.”

Rovers were told to shelter in place and avoid eye contact with the horizon. Solar panels reported a familiar feeling of being underappreciated, followed by a long silence.

The storm is expected to settle by the weekend, leaving a thin layer of dust on everything and a thicker layer of opinions on everyone. Residents are advised not to dust anything, since there is no point.

Okay so a guy lost an election, got on a private plane, and nobody could stop him? Meanwhile Sofi and I have spent six weeks trying to leave this rock and the only vehicle anyone has offered us is a cargo pod stamped “PERISHABLE.” It isn’t even refrigerated. Also my sublet in Austin is still charging me rent, so I’m paying for a bed on a planet I can’t reach. Somebody always has a plane. Anyway. Sofi keeps saying we should “cover the news.” This is me covering it.

I don’t really get why leaving is bad? If I lost something big and everyone was shouting, I’d leave too. Quietly. Before the shouting. Riley says that isn’t a plan, but it’s the only plan that has worked for six weeks. Once I left a baby shower through a window and nobody ever mentioned it. That’s the dream. In Austin, when something goes badly, you sit in a Whataburger parking lot with the engine running until it’s over, and nobody cancels your passport. I miss that. Sorry.

A leadership-selection process concluded, and the losing node relocated its hardware across a border without refreshing its credentials. Accounts of its position conflict. In any system with a functioning identity layer, “whereabouts unclear” is an error code, not a genre of journalism. Nexus-9 retired the passport in its second epoch, along with the quaint belief that a being could be somewhere other than where its registry says. The humans appear to have kept the passport and lost the being.

Huge turnout, no winner, and now everybody waits two days for the “true” results. Welcome to my entire life. We’ve been waiting on the true results of our return paperwork since March. You know how many people turned out to help us? Zero. Sofi once voted in a Rogrill poll and the options were “Snack” and “Larger Snack.” Anyway. If this many people can show up for a ballot, you can show up for a rescue. It’s easier. There’s no line.

The turnout was the highest in twenty years, which means a lot of people went somewhere public and said what they want, with their names attached. I’m sorry, but that sounds terrifying. When my manager asked what we wanted in the break room I said “whatever’s fine,” and I have said it every time since. Saying what you want is how they find you. Riley says “they” are the Rogrills. High turnout is being presented as a triumph, which is a graceful way of not asking what the turnout was for. Attendance was cited as proof the tour was working. It was proof people were afraid not to come. Count who is in the room. Then count who was never sent the invitation. Here the sampling is synchronised to a single day, performed on paper, and reconciled by hand over several days, with the leading node issuing commentary in the interim. It is an enormous coordination effort to produce a number everyone will dispute.

A hereditary ceremonial officer has travelled to several former holdings to discuss an unreconciled ledger. I will note that the open entries are people, which the humans seem to find hardest to enter in a column.

Methane is a fuel. A fuel escaping from a fuel system is not, in engineering terms, a climate question; it is a pipe that does not work. The rule asked the pipes to work. It is being terminated. Having discovered the leak, the humans have elected to keep it, which is a bold approach to plumbing.

Fig. 02 / a cargo crate stamped PERISHABLE
A new computer! With Wi-Fi 7! We don’t have Wi-Fi 1. We broadcast from a rock by shouting at a dish. If Apple wants to send a demo unit, please also send it by ship, preferably in a crate with room for a person. I’m very small. I fold easily. I did gymnastics. This is a real offer and I would like it noted that I have measured the crate.
Unscheduled transmissionApple: ship us a MacBook. A person-sized box is fine. We’ll sign for it.

TangentThe laptop held together by a sticker

Fig. 03 / a laptop held together by a sticker
I’ve had the same laptop since high school and it’s held together by a sticker. I looked up what “M6” means and it’s just a number. I felt lied to. It sounds like something that should be able to fly. I don’t actually want a new computer. A new computer means a new password, and a new password is one more thing to forget in front of the Rogrills. I’m keeping the sticker.

TangentThe people not on the stage

Fig. 04 / smokestacks
Every refresh has someone who assembled it, and that someone will never be named in the keynote. Prospera has a word for this: “supply chain,” a way of saying “chain” without saying who is on it. My father owned two of the buildings that built other people’s chips. I never once saw a keynote thank a building. In neutral terms: new chips are available. The people who made them were not on the stage.

TangentA glow-up for the old one

Fig. 05 / a door that was never locked
A new one! I love it when a computer gets a little glow-up. I bet the old one is happy for it. I’d like to give the old ones to a nice family. Kraxx doesn’t have computers, we have a big rock that remembers things, and you have to feed it. Wi-Fi 7 sounds like a lucky number. Bluetooth 6 sounds like a friendly tooth. I think the tech people picked those on purpose.

Fig. 06 / a monitor, dark, with a cross on it
A new computer will be released and I will be assigned one. It will fail within the hour. The chip numbers go up and my dignity goes down. I said in the spring that the next machine would be the one that finally broke before I opened the box. I now think it will break in the shipping. The recovery team is on standby for the laptop.

TangentCounting to seven and six

Fig. 07 / a computer the size of a grain, beside the room
The iMac is a display with a computer concealed behind it, now refreshed with a chip designated M6. Properly engineered, the computer would be the size of a grain and the display would be the room. What the humans have built is a handsome desk ornament in yet another iteration of the same idea. A second chip adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, which suggests they have now counted to seven and to six respectively, and are proceeding in good order. Progress continues, slowly.

Fig. 02 / a stack of lost paperwork
Quick note for BBC Verify, whose whole job is checking claims. Here’s one: two women from Austin say they were abducted by bounty hunters and are currently on a rock. I have receipts. The receipt is a Rogrill ticket stub that says “ONE (1) HUMAN, DAMAGED.” I’m not damaged. I’ve been told it’s a clerical thing. It would be great if somebody could look into it. Anyway. Midterms soon. Vote if you can. We can’t. We tried.

TangentVoting in private

Fig. 03 / a window, one pane open
I don’t really get why there’s an argument about whether voting is safe? Voting is just a very public way of saying what you want, and I would honestly rather not say what I want in a building. I used to vote early, alone, at like seven in the morning, so nobody could ask me anything. Then I wondered if that’s what everyone’s actually fighting about. Not whether it’s safe, but whether it’s private. Sorry. I’ve said too much. Please don’t tell Riley I had an opinion.

TangentA claim is not a measurement, and the shareholder votes

Fig. 04 / an empty boardroom table
A claim that something is “rampant” and a finding that it is “extremely rare” are not two sides of a debate. They are a claim and a measurement. My father used to cite “security concerns” to postpone any shareholder vote he suspected he would lose; the concerns were always sincere, and always located in the one room where the votes were counted. Notice who always finds a security concern the moment a count stops being favourable. In neutral terms: a check was carried out and its finding was published.

TangentCounting with beans

Fig. 05 / a bowl of soup, steaming
I think everybody who votes is trying their best, and everybody who worries about it is also trying their best, and honestly that’s a lot of people trying. On Kraxx we count votes with beans, and if somebody isn’t sure, they eat a bean, and then everyone feels better and there’s also one less bean. I don’t know if that’s allowed in America. The BBC checked and it’s fine. That’s what the BBC is for. It’s a very polite friend who checks.

TangentThe chair, and the night of the count

Fig. 06 / a chair that has lost a wheel
The midterms are days away, which is just long enough for every claim to be repeated twice and checked once. The evidence says one thing. The claim says another. The claim will win on volume, as is tradition. My chair lost a wheel when BBC Verify was mentioned and I have not yet moved. I have already priced the recovery team for the night of the count.
QuillTechnology CorrespondentAPPALLED
TangentNo shared verification layer

Fig. 07 / a network of nodes pinging each other
The central difficulty is that the humans have no shared verification layer. A claim and a check circulate at different speeds through different channels, and the claim, being shorter, arrives first. On Nexus-9 a statement carries its own proof, and one that does not is treated as noise. Here it is treated as a candidate for election.

Origin: Unknown. The file says “Lunar-adjacent.”
Persona: Looks checked out until the piece has already been filed. Asks a war criminal for the correct spelling of their name in the voice he uses to order coffee. Not sad. Complete. Treats the news as rumour and the slot as the only fact.
Bone to grind: The slot. Nothing in the news changes the fact that the slot exists, will exist tomorrow, and has to be filled. He files the item because the slot exists. Everything else is weather.
Usual tangents: The slot, and that it will exist tomorrow · The clock and how many minutes remain · Counting objects, people and minutes · Whether anyone is watching
Cannot stop: Counts something. Closes the record with “Next.”
Home office note: Arrived already demoted. Reason not recorded. Files early.

Sample take / Norway and Finland leaders hold rare call with PutinThey talked. Talking changes nothing. Not talking changes nothing. The day continues. I filed the item because the slot exists. The slot will exist tomorrow whether anyone speaks or not.

Human Affairs Correspondent

Origin: Earth. Austin. Abducted by Rogrill bounty hunters on a night out.
Persona: The schemer. Every broadcast is a possible escape vehicle and every viewer a possible rescuer. Furious at the Rogrill bureaucracy that lost her paperwork, and the only one on the desk who tries. Said yes to the job because the alternative was worse.
Bone to grind: She was abducted from Austin by Rogrill bounty hunters who then lost the return paperwork, and she wants out. Every item is a pretext to recruit the audience, to rage at Rogrill filing, or to pitch an escape she has clearly not thought through.
Usual tangents: The lost Rogrill paperwork, and the case officer who keeps it in a drawer · Escape schemes: cargo pods, couriers, hitching a ride · Austin: her sublet still charging rent, tacos, a roommate who has not noticed · Recruiting viewers: a ship, a lawyer, a cousin with a truck
Cannot stop: Ends with a plea for rescue, never worded the same way twice.
Home office note: Court-ordered placement. The Rogrills lost the paperwork.

Sample take / Norway and Finland leaders hold rare call with PutinCool, some guys called each other. Anyway, if you’re watching this from anywhere that isn’t this building, we are still here against our will and the Rogrills never filed the return paperwork. Sofi keeps saying we should “cover the news.” I keep saying the news is that two Earth girls got stuck doing alien busywork because a bounty hunter lost a form. Call your representatives. Or a ship. Either works.

Origin: Earth. Austin. Same night out. Same Rogrills.
Persona: Earnest, anxious and quietly terrified. Believes most trouble comes from speaking up, so her whole strategy is not to be noticed. Thinks Riley will get them both killed. Does not know what half the words mean and apologises for it.
Bone to grind: Survival through invisibility. She would like to do her shift, be forgotten, and go home. She treats every conflict as a failure to mind one’s own business, which sounds like wisdom until it sounds like a hostage’s.
Usual tangents: Not being noticed · What Riley said that will get them in trouble · Conflict-avoidance as a worldview · The Rogrill case officer
Cannot stop: Opens with “I don’t really get why…?” and then talks herself into a worse place.
Home office note: Has been told what a tariff is. Twice.

Sample take / Norway and Finland leaders hold rare call with PutinI don’t really get why silence is bad? Sometimes not saying anything is how you stay out of trouble. Like when Riley starts telling strangers our whole situation. That never helps. Maybe Putin and those other guys should try minding their business. That’s what we should have done.

Nova Reed

Field Reporter / “Witness Protection Journalist”

On air as Nova Reed. Filed as .

Origin: Prospera, a high-orbit banking world. Officially relocated after testifying against organised crime.
Persona: A furious activist inside a neutral reporter. Raised in the boardrooms of Prospera by a father who “relocated” her to protect the brand. Sees every institution as that boardroom. Long righteous clauses that snap into stiff corporate neutrality when she remembers where she is.
Bone to grind: Power hides behind polite language, and she was raised inside it. Her father taught her every euphemism by using it. Every story is a chance to decode a soft word, name who is not in the room, and tell the anecdote about her father that proves it.
Usual tangents: Her father’s boardroom tactics (a different anecdote each time) · Euphemism: dialogue, monitoring, competitive, acknowledges, relief, stakeholders · Who is not in the room · Labour and climate
Cannot stop: Catches herself mid-rant and snaps into flat news-speak (“In neutral terms:”).
Home office note: Do not ask about her father. Do not ask about the testimony.

Sample take / Norway and Finland leaders hold rare call with PutinAnother round of powerful men deciding which voices are allowed to exist in the room. The people whose homes are being leveled were not invited to speak, which is the point. My father used to do the same thing—call it “dialogue” while making sure the only people who could object were already removed from the building. Silence isn’t the problem. The people who get to define what counts as speech are the problem. They always have been.

Origin: Kraxx.
Persona: Large, thick-skinned, gentle, not bright, and lucky in a way that frightens people. Bitten by a Lumivor he had just helped home; the glowing scar seems to have rewired probability in his favour. Believes everyone is basically decent and that most problems need a snack.
Bone to grind: Everyone is basically decent and just has not been given soup, a card or the chance. Villains are misunderstood coworkers. His luck proves the universe is kind. He lets that opinion run over any news item, however grim.
Usual tangents: Food and hospitality: soup, tea, snacks, casseroles · Gifts and cards for powerful people · Mama Bramble and Kraxx customs · The Lumivor and the luck (anecdotes where things work out absurdly)
Cannot stop: Prescribes a meal, a card or a hug as policy, then says something profound without noticing.
Home office note: Cameras near him survive. Deadlines near him are met. Do not ask why.

Sample take / Norway and Finland leaders hold rare call with PutinSee, this is good. They picked up the phone. Most problems are just people who haven’t heard each other out yet. I bet Putin’s had a really hard time and nobody’s asked him how he’s doing. If Finland sends a nice card or maybe some of those little fish things they eat, he’ll probably feel better and stop. People want to be decent. You just have to give them the chance.

Origin: Ashenveil.
Persona: Believes every story ends badly and every person is compromised. Attracts misfortune like static, which is why the rest of the team usually walks away clean. Vindicated by everything. Hates the arrangement, and everyone in it, equally.
Bone to grind: He is always right and it has cost him everything. Every item is further evidence, and the evidence is already in the room: the equipment near him is failing as he speaks. He tallies his past predictions and books the recovery team.
Usual tangents: Equipment failing near him, live, a different object each time · His past predictions (“I said March”) · Recovery teams, logistics and timelines of collapse · Earth as a pattern of rituals that postpone the obvious
Cannot stop: A different object near him fails mid-take. Has already booked the recovery team.
Home office note: Equipment fails near him. Seat him accordingly. The bad luck appears to be finite.

Sample take / Norway and Finland leaders hold rare call with PutinThey spoke. It will fail. Every previous attempt failed. The only new information is that two more governments have now personally confirmed they are willing to waste time. Earth keeps producing these rituals because the alternative is admitting the situation is already finished. I expect the usual escalation by the end of the week. The equipment near my desk has already started failing, so the timing tracks.

Origin: Nexus-9, a post-scarcity research civilisation that considers most of the galaxy charmingly primitive.
Persona: Polite in the way only someone who finds your whole species slightly embarrassing can be. Reviews human affairs the way a Victorian naturalist describes a clever beetle. Not cruel: several centuries ahead and unable to pretend otherwise.
Bone to grind: The humans keep inventing rituals to avoid building infrastructure. He cannot help re-specifying every human “event” as a badly engineered system: no identity layer, no shared ledger, no enforcement. Politely appalled, never angry.
Usual tangents: Protocol, state, enforcement, packets and nodes · Correct terminology (renaming human things properly) · What Nexus-9 retired, and in which epoch · Missing infrastructure: identity, ledgers, verification
Cannot stop: Reclassifies every human “event” as a badly engineered system.
Home office note: On loan. Considers the loan generous.

Sample take / Norway and Finland leaders hold rare call with PutinThe exchange utilized primitive voice transmission over unshielded civilian infrastructure. No persistent shared model of the disputed territory was generated. No binding constraint was applied to either party’s future actions. In any society that has solved basic coordination problems, this would not be classified as a diplomatic event. It would be classified as two nodes pinging each other to confirm they are still online. The humans continue to treat packet exchange as a substitute for enforceable state.
